Supporting Our Youth Cultivate. Create. Celebrate.

Mentoring Program

SOY's Mentoring Program matches individual youth with a safe, out, adult mentor who helps youth cultivate self-acceptance, become proud of their gender and sexual identities, and strengthen their connection to community.

Youth-mentor matches are made based on the needs of the youth as well as their interests and values. Together, mentors and youth explore questions about identity, sexuality and community. Mentors provide support, encouragement and non-judgmental listening to talk about anything and everything going on with life, family, school, friends, relationships and more.

Mentors and youth spend time together on a regular basis to:

  • meet at a coffee shop/juice bar to hang out and talk
  • go to a movie or a show in the community
  • explore the city together
  • cook and share a meal
  • celebrate birthdays, holidays and other occasions

What youth have to say about the Mentoring Program

“Through conversations with my mentor and his unconditional support, I have learned that there are no ‘shoulds’ about gender or identity. Who I am is up to me to define and I don’t need to fit into anyone else’s expectations.”

“Having a mentor is inspiring, comforting, fun, fulfilling. I love our similarities, differences, conversations - it’s awesome.”
